Liam Clancy - The Dutchman

Liam Clancy was the last surviving member of Ireland's premier Folk band The Clancy Brothers & Tommy Makem until his death in 2009. Liam wa the lead vocalist and played guitar on most of the groups 55 albums. This album is a terrific example of Liam's excellent ballad singing. It is an essential album to own for anyone who enjoys Irish music, or just plain great folk music. The songs The Dutchman and the Streets of London will haunt you forever they will always be playing in your heart and mind.

Eric Rigler - Traditional Celtic Christmas

Tis the season or so i have been told and will post accordingly. Eric Rigler's Traditional Celtic Christmas is a collection of eleven tracks that reflect the Celtic holiday experience. He mixes in the standard holiday selections "O Little Town of Bethlehem" with some Celtic-themed carols "Baloo Lammy", and the two mix quite well. Fans of Celtic music may want to check this out, as it definitely reflects a different side of Christmas.

Finbar Furey - Traditional Irish Pipe Music

Finbar Furey needs no real introduction to Celtic music fans except to point out that when he released this magnificent album in 1969 he was only 21 years old and already a master of the Uillean Pipes. I took the following from the sleeve notes "The Fureys are a musical family. Finbar's father, Ted, is a well-known fiddler who for many years played in that center of Dublin music, O'Donahue's Bar in Merrion Row. Finbar's arrival in Britain was preceded by his reputation as the youngest player ever to spellbind an audience. The pipes have always been considered an instrument to be mastered only in maturity. Possibly Finbar will be a great piper at the end of twenty-one years' playing, but certainly he was already a staggeringly good piper after just twenty-one years of living".....enjoy

Paddy Keenan - Poirt An Phiobaire

Paddy Keenan first gained fame as a founding member of The Bothy Band. Since that group's dissolution in the late 1970's, Keenan has released a number of solo and collaborative recordings, and continues to tour both as a soloist, and with singer/guitarist Tommy O'Sullivan. Paddy Keenan is the king of the Uilleann Pipes and Low Whistle, and on Poirt An Phiobaire he expresses himself with some wonderful sets with the splendid support of  Arty McGlynn on Guitar. A blend of Irish laced with a bit of Breton, this is a must-have CD for any Celtic music lovers.

Ewan MacColl - Bad Lads And Hard Cases

A mighty fine selection of Scottish, Irish & English folk ballads of crime and criminals. Released way back in 1957 on the Riverside record label, Ewan is supported by the one and only Peggy Seeger [guitar and banjo] on this merry romp through the underbelly of these Islands. Some of the ballads will be very familiar to you all but others will I hope be a new experience.

Alasdair Fraser and Paul Machlis - Road North

1989's The Road North is one of the key albums in the Celtic craze of the late '80s and '90s. Working with keyboardist Paul Machlis, Traditional Fiddler Alasdair Fraser created an album of original material that sounds timeless (there are a few standards and covers thrown in for good measure, too). The reason the record works is because the performances are lively and rhythmic, keeping one eye on the past and one eye on the future. When Machlis plays a synthesizer, things drift into new age territory, which may upset some listeners, but the wondrous thing about the album is how it keeps the spirit of Celtic music alive without treating it as a museum piece. And that's also the reason why it, along with Clannad and Enya records, kickstarted the Celtic-new age fusion that exploded in popularity in the '90s.

Al O'Donnell - Al O'Donnell

Irish Folk singer Al O'Donnell who passed away earlier this year has left a short but lasting legacy to the Folk and Traditional music scene. The singer, guitarist and banjo player from Dublin began performing in the 1960s and was a member of the legendary Traditional band Sweeney's Men. O'Donnell, who worked in the graphics department in RTÉ, went on to record two albums in the 1970s " Ramble Away" & "Al O'Donnell". For five days in the summer of 1957, folklorist Edith Fowke recorded over eighty songs performed by O. J. Seoirse Ó Dochartaigh - Slán Agus Beannacht

Donegal native Seoirse Ó Dochartaigh is a very talented man who has successfully forged careers as an Artist [painting], Author, Lyricist and of course as a Musician. There isn't one bad track on his 2007 album Slán Agus Beannacht from the opening track "The Tinker's Daughter" a gently rousing song which sets the tone for the rest especially "Morgan Mangan", "Cavan Girl" and the haunting plaintive quality of "Slan agus beannacht". Seoirse has a beautiful mellow voice and a fabulous vocal range siging in both Gaelic and English.

Anne Briggs - Sing a Song for You

Anne Briggs is an outstanding English Traditional/Folk singer. Although she travelled widely in the 1960s and early 1970s, appearing at folk clubs and venues in England, Scotland and Ireland, she never aspired to commercial success or to achieve widespread public acknowledgment of her music. However, she was an influential figure in the English folk music revival, being a source of songs and musical inspiration for others such as A. L. Lloyd, Bert Jansch, Jimmy Page, The Watersons, June Tabor, Sandy Denny, Richard Thompson and Maddy Prior. Sing a Song for You is a British/Celtic Traditional/Folk album released in 1997 by Anne Briggs. It was originally recorded in 1973 but was initially withheld from release as Anne Briggs reportedly wasn't satisfied with her singing on the album

Irish Ramblers - Patriot Game

The Irish Ramblers [AKA The other Clancy Brothers] released only two albums in the early 1960's, this was their first released in 1963 and contains very early versions of Sean South from Garryowen and Follow Me Up to Carlow, pre-dating the Wolfe Tones and Planxty versions (respectively) by several years, also a fine cover of the Brendan Behan classic The Patriot Game. This album also appears on web searches due to the participation of Roger [Jim] McGuinn.

Taken from the sleeve notes
We are three brothers — Pat, Brendan and Eugene Clancy, coming from the small village of Charlemonton on the banks of the river Blackwater, separating the counties of Armagh and Tyrone. These two counties have always been havens of Irish- folk music, both vocal and instrumental. Although we have been singing songs all of our lives, our first real introduction to Irish folk music was in the instrumental field. "Ceilidh" or country dancing is still popular in Ireland and it was in a Ceilidh band that we learned a lot of Irish music. There are usually seven or eight people in such a band; two fiddles, two accordions, bass, drums and a piano. Some of the dances lend themselves to vocals, and it was one night while playing, singing, and enjoying ourselves to the full at the Irish Club, Dublin, that an American gentleman heard us and asked if the three of us would like to come to sing our songs and play our music in America. That was in March 1963 , and since then we have played Chicago's Gate of Horn, New York's Gerde's Folk City, Boston's Unicorn, Philadelphia's Second Fret, and many other clubs, including a memorable evening at Carnegie Hall.

Irish folk music is very hard to define. Where does it start and end? We people in the British Isles have a great similarity among our songs, and we can find different versions of the same song in many parts of Ireland, England, Scotland, and Wales. For years, Irishmen, mostly north of Ireland men, have been going over to the Lowland areas of Scotland to find employment at the harvest time. Naturally enough they brought back with them songs of the Scottish laborers. Some of these have become intermingled with Irish songs which they have known.

On this album we have a collection of songs and dances which cover most aspects of Irish life, and we all hope you enjoy them.

Willie Clancy - Pipering of Willie Clancy Vol 1

Every year, in early July, the town of Miltown Malbay in West Clare becomes an international centre for traditional musicians. The town reverberates to the sound of flutes, fiddles, accordians, concertinas and especially uilleann pipes. The celebration is in memory of Miltown Malbay's famous son, the late Willie Clancy. Willie Clancy possessed amazing talents -whistle player, flute player, singer , story teller, philosopher and wit. He was particularly known for his mastery of that most complex of wind instruments the Uilleann Pipes. To create music such as this you need two things above all others. Firstly, very dexterous fingers and secondly, a deep love for what you are playing. The playing of Willie Clancy is as organic to Ireland as the cry of a curlew on a lonesome hill, or the smells of a peat fire and a hot whiskey on a cold winter's night in County Sligo. Simply perfect!!

Sean Tyrrell - Cry Of A Dreamer

Sean Tyrrell’s 1995 album Cry Of A Dreamer has been hailed as a timeless masterpiece. In the long run, however, it may be seen as merely the beginning of an extraordinary musical saga. Right from the opening bars of Johnny Mulhern’s ‘Mattie’, Seán Tyrrell’s Cry Of A Dreamer sounded like one of those handful of discs that can only be described as timeless and transcendent. Never having heard of Seán Tyrrell before, the impact of his first release was all the greater. Undoubtedly a master of his craft.

Indulge me for a moment as an exile with a few lyrics from Dick Farrellys classic Isle Of Inisfree which is covered expertly by Sean Tyrell.....enjoy

"I've met some folk who say that I'm a dreamer
And I've no doubt there's truth in what they say
For sure a body's bound to be a dreamer
When all the the things he loves are far away.

And precious things are dreams unto an exile
They take him through a land across the sea
Especially when it happens he's in exile
From that dear lovely Isle of Inisfree."

Tri Yann - Le Pélégrin

As the best known "Celtic" band in France, Tri Yann [Three Johns] are one of the longest-standing Breton music groups surviving from the folk rock revival of the 1970's. Le Pélégrin released in January 2001 is a trip across Celtic regions, from Scotland to La Compostella. The songs are almost all compositions by the group. For the first time, the group uses a female singer in Bleunwenn (sister of Konan Mevel) who took over while Jean-Paul Corbineau was sick in 2000. The group are also famous for the outlandish costumes worn on stage.

Clannad - Lore

Lore was a 1995 studio album by Irish Traditional group Clannad. It was greeted with great acclaim by music critics worldwide, often stating that this was one of Clannad's greatest recordings. This has the most Gaelic songs of all Clannad albums since 1982, and was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best New Age Album, the band's second nomination, although it lost to The Memory of Trees by Enya (Eithne Ní Bhraonaín), who was once a member of Clannad and is the sister of band members Moya Brennan, Ciarán Brennan and Pól Brennan as well as niece to Noel Ó Dúgáin and Pádraig Ó Dúgáin. Clancy Brothers & Tommy Makem - Sing Of The Sea

Here is an excellent collection of Sea Shantys by the equally excellent Clancy Brothers & Tommy Makem. Released in 1968 Sing Of The Sea contains songs with Celtic origins plus songs from all over the world, songs of every subject matter under the stars — work — love — loneliness — always the truth about the way they felt — "For love is king to the least of men, though he be but a drunken tar" — or "My dear old mother wrote to me, 'Son, dear son, come home from sea.'". Sing Of The Sea remains one of my favourite Clancy Brothers & Tommy Makem albums....it's a joy to listen to.

Silly Wizard - So Many Partings

Silly Wizard played a variety of Scottish folk music, both instrumental and vocal, from fast jigs and reels to slow airs. While the majority of the items they played were traditional songs or tunes, the band did write many compositions of their own. Phil Cunningham generally wrote instrumental music centered on the accordion, and Stewart wrote several songs in a style often distinctly traditional. Once Stewart's singing and the driving, impassioned instrumentals of the Cunningham brothers had established themselves at its centre, the group's overall sound changed little. So Many Partings was the third album by Silly Wizard released in 1979. On this album the songs "The Valley Of Strathmore" and "The Highland Clearances" were written by Andy M. Stewart.

Band

Clancy Brothers & Tommy Makem & Tommy Drennan & The Monarchs - Irish Revolutionary Songs

The first 12 songs on this 1959 compilation are performed by Tommy Drennan & The Monarchs from Limerick, who were one of the biggest showbands of that era. Tommy Drennan along with the likes of Brendan Bowyer and Dickie Rock enjoyed celebrity status in the ballrooms of Ireland and mainland Britain. The rest of this fine collection is performed by the legendary Clancy Brothers & Tommy Makem who need no introduction. It's an expertly performed album and a piece of Irish social history covering mainly the 1798 Rebellion.

Here's a quick extract from Seamus Heaney’s  poem “Requiem for the Croppies” one of my favourites covering the 1798 Irish rebellion..

Until… on Vinegar Hill… the final conclave.
Terraced thousands died, shaking scythes at cannon.
The hillside blushed, soaked in our broken wave.
They buried us without shroud or coffin
And in August… the barley grew up out of our grave.

Winston Scotty Fitzgerald - A Selection of new Jigs, Reels, Strathspeys, Hornpipes & Waltzes

Winston 'Scotty' Fitzgerald was a renowned Cape Breton fiddler. He was a pioneer in recorded performances of the music, and has heavily influenced the style and repertoire of later generations of players. Both his father and older brother played the violin, and Winston began to take an interest in playing at age eight. His first public performance was at a picnic at age twelve. The Fitzgeralds worked as fishermen in the summer, and in the 1930s Winston also worked at the shipyards in Halifax in the winter. During this time, Winston played radio shows and tours with Hank Snow for about two and a half years. Winston formed a group called the "Radio Entertainers" with Beattie Wallace (piano) and Estwood Davidson (guitar). The group recorded numerous 78s, as well as four LPs. As he became better known, Winston also got exposure playing on the 'Cliff MacKay' and 'Don Messer' shows. Later, he played as part of the Cape Breton Symphony on The John Allan Cameron Show. Never a full-time musician, he worked at a variety of jobs, including cooking, carpentry, and aluminum work.

Ron Gonella - Scottish Violin Music

Ron Gonnella played on the Scottish Dance Band circuit with the bands of Jim Johnstone and Andrew Rankine. He had his own band for a while - featuring Iain MacPhail on accordion - but it was as a solo artist that he toured all over the world promoting Scottish fiddle music. He recorded many albums this one was his first solo recording released in 1966 (Scots Disc SDL-001, 1966) He is accompanied by Robert Campbell on piano.

The instrument Gonella played was a 1722 Italian violin made by Carlo Antonio Tanegia. I have been told that after his death there were a number of fiddlers desperate to try it to achieve the same wonderful tone that Gonella produced; in the end it turned out to be a mediocre fiddle, and it was the musician who was special, not the instrument.

Dolores Keane - Night Owl

Dolores Keane is one of those rare singers whose voices mellow and improve rather than weaken with age. She has broadened her stylistic range and her performing repertoire in recent years, still focusing on the traditional music of her native Ireland but also exploring themes from other cultures and tunes by modern songwriters. Night Owl opens on a somber note, with a despairing song apparently about the Northern Irish Troubles, and the mood is scarcely lightened at any point thereafter; there is a gorgeous rendition of the mournful "Wind that Shakes the Barley," one lament, two back-to-back farewells, a lover's plea, a tale of mass martyrdom, and a song inspired by the street urchins of Sao Paolo.....Glorious.....Enjoy....xx

Donald Davidson - Banchory Moothie

Donald Davidson was born in Ballater, Aberdeenshire, but soon moved to the Deeside town of Banchory. After hearing Scottish music such as the Wyper Brothers on his father's gramophone, he took up the mouth organ at an early age, joining his siblings in a musical background. In his late teens Donald was playing for the radio in Aberdeen, and came to the attention of a representative of Beltona Records. In 1929 and again in 1931 he travelled to London to record a number of tracks which were released on Beltona, and which spreads his reputation further. This lead to advertising deals; Hohner used Davidson's name to promote their instruments. A final recording session took place in 1939 (which included some duets with Willie Kemp), and while Donald kept playing and being interested in music, it was never a full-time occupation. Davidson died in Aberdeen in 1987.
